Exploring Europe’s Oldest Running Cinemas on Instagram

To see more photos and videos from Europe’s oldest cinemas, explore the Etoile Pagode, Kino International and Cameo Cinema location pages. For a glimpse into cinemas across the world, browse the #cinematreasures hashtag.

Founded in 1911, the Oxford Picture Palace (as it was then known) has been closed, reopened, refurbished and renamed many times in its long and enduring history. Like many of the oldest running cinemas in Europe, the staying power of the Ultimate Picture Palace stands as a testament to our love for film.

Whether it’s Berlin’s modernist Kino International—built in the 1960s, hosting premieres until the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and now home to the Berlinale Film Festival—or Edinburgh’s 1914-built Cameo (@thecameocinema) with its terrazzo floor and original ticket kiosks, some of Europe’s oldest cinemas are filled with undoubtable charm.

Over the last three years, Instagrammers across Europe have been capturing these great veterans of the celluloid medium. With their help, we put together a list of some favorites to explore:

Just wow!!!!

The Making Of: @alliedmaker’s Handcrafted Lighting

To see more photos and videos showing how Allied Maker designs and builds handcrafted lighting, follow @alliedmaker on Instagram.

While attending art school, the founder of lighting design firm Allied Maker (@alliedmaker), Ryden Rizzo, quickly realized that spending hours in front of the computer was not for him. “I always worked a lot of freelance jobs doing web design, photography and video,” says Ryden. However, he found it frustrating working for clients that didn’t share his minimal design sense. “School became a way to experiment with new mediums.”

Ryden became fascinated with the intersection of design and music. He taught himself basic woodworking from watching videos on YouTube. “I then knew I wanted a more traditional education, so I found a small school in Vermont where I was taught how to build my own classical guitar. We spent a month in near isolation crafting our guitars from scratch using traditional hand tools under the guidance of our master craftsman.

"When I returned home," says Ryden, "I instantly cleaned out my garage and set up a basic woodworking studio."

A year later, Allied Maker has grown into a three-person team making beautiful handcrafted lighting from Ryden’s garage and sharing the process on Instagram.

"I joined Instagram because I needed a way to document the work I was doing," Ryden says. "I was instantly captivated and inspired by the work of other people—Instagram has given me the ability to receive instant feedback from a community who shares my passion for design and craftsmanship."

Ryden values the feedback he receives from others, but also uses Instagram to better understand his own artistic process. “From inspiration to finished product, sharing and documenting my design practice has made me more observant of my own artistic flow.”

Here’s the thing about the “Don’t be a Bella, be a Katniss” meme going around; it’s wrong, but people are saying it’s wrong for the wrong reasons. We want to compare Katniss and Bella with how “strong” they are and how each is valid in their own right because of that. Wrong. Bella is not strong, Katniss is not strong. Yes, they risk their lives for people they love. That’s strong, but it’s a strong act. As people, these characters aren’t inherently strong. Bella needs Edward, so much to the point that being without him makes life seem unworthy. Katniss is jaded, to the point that she pushes away everyone to keep to herself. And then after the games, when she finally lets Peeta in, she’s never truly happy. The games ruined her. So let’s not talk about Strong Female Characters.
What bugs me the most about this meme is how it’s pitting two great series against each other. Two series, which I might add, that have nothing in common. We could talk about love triangles but that’s so common these days that I don’t even count it. Also, it’s pitting two women against each other. And these women are also nothing alike. Bella clings to Edward because he shows her a better world than her own. Katniss runs away from boys because the thought of getting married and having kids in her world petrifies her. But why is Katniss Strong, then? Here’s why, because even though she ends up with Peeta in the end, it’s still not a happily ever after. Katniss is Strong because her story isn’t a love story. Bella is Weak because her story is. This is how we define strong vs weak in YA literature and it needs to stop.
Neither Bella nor Katniss are perfect. Neither of them have it all figured out by the time their respective series ends. But both women have figured out a way to live their lives with the lot they’ve been given. To me, a Strong Female Character should be one that inspires me to live my life to the fullest. Both Bella and Katniss do that. So to that meme I say, why? Can’t I just be both?
